Our Goal 
The Public Works Street Department's goal is to clear and maintain city streets for all types of vehicular traffic.

Overview 
View the  Street Map of streets within city limits. The Public Works Department is responsible for the ongoing maintenance and snow removal of all streets within city limits.

The  Meade County Highway Department maintains anything outside of Sturgis city limits. For questions on roads outside of Sturgis city limits, contact the Meade County Highway Department at (605) 347-4565.

The  South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT)  maintains the "S curves" on Lazelle Street going east past the high school. For questions on highways outside of Sturgis city limits, contact the State Highway Department at (605) 394-2244.

The SDDOT regulates the traffic lights within city limits, and the City of Sturgis is responsible for maintaining them.

During the summer months, mag water keeps the dust down for Sly Hill and gravel streets within City limits.

Our department is also responsible for maintaining the street lights lining Lazelle, Junction, and select areas of town (any steel-posted street light). Black Hills Energy maintains all other street lights (wood-posted street lights in residential neighborhoods). Please call them at  (605) 720-2440  to report street light outages in residential areas.

Street Department Responsibilities also Include: 

• Patching asphalt
• Maintaining gravel streets by blading and graveling
• Plowing snow and sanding
• Mowing ditches in the City right-of-way
• Trimming around stop signs
• Barricading streets for special events and public safety incidents
• Maintaining street signs and regulatory signs
• Street light maintenance along Junction Avenue and Lazelle Street
• Painting cross-walks around schools and curbs that are no-parking areas
• Managing the contractor for portable toilets
• Hanging temporary signs and decorations for special events
• Cleaning streets and downtown sidewalks during the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally
