Building Permits
Before any person constructs a building or structure within the City or causes any alterations to any existing building or structure within the City (costing more than $300.00), he/she must first obtain a Building Permit from the Building Inspector. An alteration of a building or structure means any alteration, addition, or removal of any one, part of one, or more than one partition, wall, ceiling, windows, structural member of roof system or floor. All building permits are obtained by using the Citizenserve web portal. Supporting documentation can be uploaded at the time of application. Once the application is submitted online, staff will review your application. If there is any missing documentation or more information required, staff will contact you via phone or email. When the application is approved, you will receive an email regarding the status of the application. Payments can only be made once the application is approved.
Building permit fees are based on project cost or total square footage of the structure as determined by the Building Official, per City ordinance. The completed application must be accompanied by a list of all subcontractors and a copy of blueprints. You can apply for your permit and submit these items through our Citizenserve web portal.
Construction must start within 180 days of issue. A permit is good for one year from the date of issue.
If employing a contractor or a sub-contractor, all contractors and sub-contractors must be licensed by the City of Sturgis.
City ordinance and Building Code require that building numbers be visible to the public from the street.
A Certificate of Occupancy is required prior to occupying a structure.
