Sturgis City Council to discuss budget process at Monday meeting

STURGIS – The Sturgis City Council will discuss the 2025 City of Sturgis budget process at its meeting Monday, Nov. 4.

The council meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. in the Council Chambers at Sturgis City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way.

Acting Mayor Kevin Forrester has outlined a process whereby the first reading of the budget will happen at the Dec. 2 meeting of the city council and second reading a week later on Dec. 9.

Leading up to the vote on the first and second readings of the 2025 budget resolution, there will be discussion at the Nov. 18 council meeting and two special meetings of the Sturgis City Council on Nov. 12 and Nov. 25. A representative of each department will appear at the meetings to discuss their budget.

Also at the meeting Monday, the council will consider approving the reinstatement of Administrative Team Members Rick Bush and Geody VanDewater.

On October 8, 2024, Rick Bush and Geody VanDewater resigned from then-Mayor Angela Wilkerson’s chief administrative staff team. It is proposed that they be reinstated at their former stipend to assist Acting Mayor Kevin Forrester in the operation of the city.

The council will also consider approving temporary appointments of council representatives to serve on various boards and committees.

Each year the Mayor appoints Council Representatives and City Staff to serve on various boards and committees.

With the resignation of the mayor and two city council members, it is necessary to appoint temporary replacements to be effective until the completion of the canvassing of the Jan. 7, 2025, Special

Election.

Due to the current council consisting of six members, committees will need to adhere to there being no more than three members of council in attendance to be in accordance with state open meeting laws.

Per Acting Mayor Forrester, these selections are primarily based on the availability of council members during the times these boards and committees normally meet.

The council on Monday will consider 29 liquor and wine license renewal applications for the calendar year 2025.

And the council will again hear a request from San Monahan of Tom's T's to allocate the company’s royalty payment to the City of Sturgis for the amount of $3,500 be allocated to the Sturgis Community Center.
