Sturgis City Council to consider new AMA-Pro agreement

STURGIS – Discussion and possible action on a new co-host agreement with AMA-Pro for a street race on Sunday, Aug. 11, during the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally will be on the agenda for tonight’s meeting of the Sturgis City Council.

The council will meet at 6:30 p.m. Monday, May 20, in the council chambers of Sturgis City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way. Those who would like to attend should use the Sherman Street entrance.

The council will take up two separate agenda items. The council is seeking public comment and reaction on the new proposal for the new Sturgis TT 2024 Proposal. If the Council wishes to act on this proposed agreement, it will have the opportunity to do so, per the agenda, following the executive session later in the meeting.

Public discussion on the proposal (and Co-Host Agreement) was presented by AMA-Pro on May 14, 2024, to the community by Cameron Gray, AMA Pro Racing’s director of industry sales, and David McGrath. The new plan involves no cost to the city, Gray and McGrath said.

Gray said the Sturgis TT has been envisioned as a cornerstone entertainment event, reconnecting the City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally to its racing roots and celebrating its enduring legacy.

The new proposal includes a new race route. The route is shorter and would begin on Main Street near Harley-Davidson Rally Point, turn on Third Street to Sherman Street then over a dirt section to Harley-Davidson Way back to Main Street.

AMA-Pro is hoping to have an agreement in place before the end of May to secure an agreement with Fox Television Network to air the race in tape delay.

Also at the meeting Monday, the council will consider approving the renewals of the Retail (on/off sale) Malt Beverage and SD Wine licenses for 2024-2025. The agenda also includes an item to discuss Ordinance 2024-04 – an ordinance revising Malt Beverage licensing under Title 3.

The city council will consider approving first reading of Ordinance 2024-03: An Ordinance Adopting 7.03.13 - Election to Fill Council or Mayoral Vacancy.

And, the council is being asked to acknowledge the 2023 Annual Report from Sturgis City Finance Officer Adam Hosch.
