Events, closures announced for Veterans Day

STURGIS – Several community events are scheduled for the upcoming Veterans Day holiday.

The Vets Club, 868 Main St., Sturgis, will host a program beginning at 10 a.m. Saturday, Nov. 11. There will be taps and a rifle salute at about 11 a.m. followed by a chili feed from noon to 2 p.m. The chili feed is being sponsored by the Black Hills Federal Credit Union and Lynn’s DakotaMart. All proceeds will benefit veteran programs at Fort Meade VA Medical Center.

Programs are also scheduled at schools within the Meade School District leading up to Veterans Day. The Sturgis Williams Middle School program will be at 2 p.m. Friday, Nov. 10, at Grunwald Auditorium. The public is welcome to attend this special event. 

The city of Sturgis has announced scheduled closures for the Veterans Day holiday.

Sturgis City offices will be closed Thursday, Nov. 9, for Veterans Day. Sturgis Public Library will be closed Nov. 10 and 11 for Veterans Day, and Friday, Nov. 10 garbage will be picked up on Monday, Nov. 13.

Sturgis Elementary School – 11/10/2023

Assembly: 8:20 a.m. (Kindergarten through second grade)

8:45 a.m. Color Guard taps at the flagpole

Assembly: 9 a.m. (Third and fourth grades)

Sturgis Williams Middle School - 11/10/2023

2 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. – Welcoming

2:15 p.m. to 3 p.m. – Program

Sturgis Brown High School - 11/09/2023

Assembly: 10 a.m.

Whitewood Elementary School – 11/10/2023

Assembly: 10:30 a.m.

Stagebarn Middle School – 11/10/2023

Assembly: 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m.

Central Meade County School – 11/09/2023

Assembly: 2 p.m. at Central Meade County Community Center

Piedmont Valley Elementary School – 11/10/2023

Program: 9 a.m.

The PVE program will culminate on Friday, Nov. 10 with a learning opportunity with students. Because of limited seating capacity, the program is limited to students only. Veterans who would like to be acknowledged as a distinguished guest can call the office at 605-787-5295 and the school will reserve a spot for them at the front of the gym.
