Sturgis City Council meets Monday

STURGIS – The Sturgis City Council will get an update on the Junction Avenue Corridor study, recognize members of the city’s Aquatics Committee, discuss the 2024 preliminary budget and consider a lease with Dixxon Supply, LLC at their meeting Monday, July 17.

The meeting begins at 5 p.m. with an executive session. The regular meeting starts at 6:30 p.m. in the council chambers at City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way, Sturgis.

The purpose of the Junction Avenue Corridor Study is to evaluate existing and anticipated future conditions of the corridor and determine potential near- and long-term improvements on the 1.1-mile portion of Junction Avenue from Harmon Street on the north, to Pine View Drive on the south.

Because Junction Avenue is not maintained by the South Dakota Department of Transportation, any improvements approved would need to be funded by the city.

Members of the city’s Aquatics Committee will be recognized for their commendable service in developing a plan for the Sturgis Adventure Park.

Also at the meeting Monday, City Finance Officer Fay Bueno will give an overview of the city’s 2024 preliminary budget.

And, the city council will consider a lease with Dixxon Supply, LLC. The city currently leases property located at 1100 Main Street and holds the lease until Dec. 31, 2026. The primary purpose of the city's lease is to foster economic development within the community by subleasing the building to other businesses and sponsors which the city maintains a relationship with, Mayor Mark Carstensen said.

The city intends to sublease the property to Dixxon Supply, LLC (Dixxon) to help the retail merchandise company develop year-round brick and mortar presence within the city. Additionally, the proposed lease promotes a positive sponsorship relationship between the city and Dixxon, the mayor said.

Dixxon Supply, LLC, intends to enter into a two-year lease of the city’s property, located at 1100 Main Street, commencing on Sept. 30, 2023, and terminating on Nov. 30, 2025.
