Sturgis City Council to review Adventure Park concepts

STURGIS – Citizens will get their first look at three designs for the Sturgis Adventure Park at today’s meeting of the Sturgis City Council.

The meeting begins at 6:30 p.m. Monday in the council chambers at Sturgis City Hall, 1040 Harley-Davidson Way.

The presentation of the Adventure Park conceptual renderings will be done by Kyle Treloar, founder, and Megan Kingsbury, partner, in Vanocker Development.

The 77-acre parcel on which the Adventure Park is planned is large enough for a 4-acre water feature and other amenities such as a small splash park, picnic area, concession stand, restrooms, paddle boarding, miniature golf, and open space for future growth.  The budget for the facility has been set at $5.9 million.

A walking/biking path would be constructed around the perimeter of the park.  After completion, the aquatic feature will contain water park structures, a zero-entry swim beach, and open water for kayaks and tubing.

This type of development is unlike any other recreational area in the Black Hills and would serve as a visitor destination.  In addition, private developers would construct residential and commercial space to adjoin the park.

The designs will be posted on the city’s website on Tuesday.

Also at the meeting Monday, Richelle Bruch, Public Relations Director with the Sturgis Soccer Association, will make a presentation for the council on the Sturgis Soccer Complex upgrade.

The council will consider road closures and road restrictions during the 2023 City of Sturgis Motorcycle Rally as well as open container for the Rally.

Also at Monday’s meeting, the Meade School District submitted plans for a cafeteria expansion at Sturgis Brown High School. Currently in the city ordinances, city staff do not have the authority to waive the permit fees and would like to bring the matter to council for a vote.

Scull Construction has applied for the building permit for a 14,304 square foot cafeteria expansion at the high school that is currently in review. The project valuation is a total of $7,945,453.00 and will have $19,813.50 in permit fees. Representatives from the school district including Wayne Wormstadt and Todd Battles have requested the permit fees be waived for the project. The IRS does recognize the school district as a tax-exempt entity. Currently projects that are permitted for non-profit 501©(3) recognized organizations are not charged a building permit fee, therefore granting a fee waiver is in line with protocol.
