Ballpark RR Crossing Safety Improvements - Completed
In 2018, in partnership with the SD Department of Transportation, RCP&E Railroad, and the Meade School District, the City agreed to assist with significant safety upgrades to the
railroad crossing on Ballpark Road. Ballpark Road is one of the primary routes to the Sturgis Elementary School and is the primary route taken by the Sturgis Ambulance and Fire Department when responding to calls.
Improvements included the following:
 Train activated flashing safety lights
 Automatic crossing gates
 Concrete surfacing at the crossing
 New Sidewalks

Budget - In a signed agreement, the City agreed to provide 10% of the funds needed for the project.  The City's portion is to be in the form of labor.  The State agreed to provide 90% of the funding from the Railway-Highway Crossing Program.  The estimated total cost of the project is $90,232.
The project was completed and the street reopened to normal traffic on June 4, 2020.

Woodland Drive Completed - This street was damaged when the 7th Street culvert washed out in 2019.  Much of the street damage took place at the Woodland and 7th Street intersection.  Additionally, the bank along Bear Butte Creek eroded and caused the collapse of approximately 400’ of a bike path.  Repairs included grading of both the north and south shores of the creek between 7th Street and the Post Office.   Shore stabilization was also added to prevent future damage.

Ellen Street Completed - Ellen Street is a residential street located on the far north side of the city that runs west from 7th Street approximately 1,900’ to the edge of city limits.

This street had been identified as needing a new overlay due to asphalt failure.  As the plans for an overlay project progressed, engineering studies were completed, and it was discovered that the street was not originally built to correct standards and the sub-base had failed.  With this information,  it was determined that the entire street needed to be excavated and rebuilt.

15th Street Crossing

15th Street Crossing - This crossing was washed out during the same flooding event that damaged several other creek crossings in 2019.
This crossing is not located in the city limits, is not within a public right of way, and does not connect to a City street.
Any type of work on this crossing would require prior approval from FEMA.

The City is willing to work with nearby county landowners if  'non-city funding' becomes available.
