Council Approves Zoning Amendment on Francis Case Property

The City requested a zoning amendment on this property to change from Public Property to PUD (planned urban development).  The City wants to surplus the land and eventually sell it to Sturgis Economic Development Corp (SEDC).  SEDC would then sell the property to a developer who is proposing a new housing development.  
The property was transferred from the City to the School District several years ago to be used as a playground and open space for the Francis Case Elementary School.  Once the new elementary school was built on Ballpark Road, the School District re-purposed the old school building for use as their IT Department.  The building has since been re-platted into its own parcel and the school district will continue to use the building for the IT Department.  
By rezoning to PUD, the City will have control over the future development including the number and size of the units.  It is a goal of the City to provide more diverse housing options as well as decreasing the amount of unused property the City is required to maintain.
The City Council voted to approve the zoning amendment.  The next step will be for the developer to present a full 'Development Plan' to the Planning & Zoning Commission for approval.
